For cost saving painted projects, a high density composite board is available, with solid wood facing to prevent sagging. Common pine is another option for painted surfaces, and is the next step up from composite board. Solid wood bookcases and mantles may be stained to match other woodwork in the home or office. Options include Oak, Cherry, Walnut, Ash, Maple and Poplar.
